Why Do We Wear Perfume?


As well as fighting body odour or making people notice you, what are the reasons humans have been so obsessed with perfumes throughout history, from the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans to modern day aroma enthusiasts?

Undoubtedly, perfumes and deodorants play an important role in many of our lives, but there are also a number of other reasons that people love them so much. We’ve outlined what these are below.

Fragrance

The most obvious benefit is that people are drawn to particular smells more than others. Simply having a perfume with an appealing smell is a good enough reason for someone to invest in an expensive bottle.

Improve your mood

You might not have realised this, but perfumes have a wonderful way of improving your mood. Whether this is just a placebo effect of being able to smell something pleasant like cool waterperfume is debatable, but many have noted an improved mood to be the main reason for wearing perfume.

As one of the world’s most popular beauty products, it’s no surprise that perfume is used to boost confidence, much like a new outfit or haircut.

Since its creation, perfume has been used to symbolise wealth, status and power. While perfume is accessible to pretty much everyone today with varied budgets, it is still seen as a symbol of status – especially expensive designer or Oud items.

Aphrodisiac

Certain types of perfumes are known to contain pheromones, which have aphrodisiac properties. Others believe that simply wearing a nice scent makes you more attractive.

Triggers memories

Perfume is also a powerful mechanism for triggering memories. They act like nothing else in being able to transport you to another time and place, reminding you of a particular moment in your life. A specific cool water perfume could even remind you of a particular person who may have worn it.

Aromatherapy

Perfume, and more specifically, the essential oils that it is made from, has many relaxing and therapeutic benefits. Citrus, fruit, floral and winter spice  scents can all help calm the mind and soothe the body.

Sleep better

Some have noted that due to perfume’s therapeutic effects, it can be used as a powerful way to cope with insomnia. Certain sprays have also been developed to use on your pillow to induce a calm and soothing atmosphere, making it easier for you to fall asleep.
