A Quick Guide to Fragrance Types and Strengths

Whether your favourite scent is Anais Anais by Cacharel or Chance by Chanel, have you ever wondered exactly how fragrances are categorised? From colognes to eu de toilettes, there’s a few terms out there that have caused confusion for more than a few newbie perfume customers.

For those who are overwhelmed by the options, we’ve created a quick guide to fragrance types and strengths to help you on your way.

Concentration

Different types of fragrances will have different concentrations. A fragrance concentration refers to the strength that a fragrance has, in terms of the amount of pure oil that is included in each bottle. Perfumes with a higher fragrance concentration, as you might guess, will contain more perfume oils and less alcohol, which is used to dilute the fragrance before it is bottled.

Parfum

Parfum – or perfume, extrait de parfum and pure perfume – has the highest fragrance concentration. Typically, perfumes contain between 15 and 40 per cent of the original fragrance. Most parfums will be between 20 and 30 percent in concentration, justifying its higher price compared to other fragrance types.

Eau de Parfum

Eau de parfum has the next highest concentration after parfum. Generally, it comes with a concentration of between 15 and 20 per cent. This is a cheaper option in most cases but lasts for a shorter time. It is one of the most popular and commonly purchased fragrance types.

Eau de Toilette

Eau de toilettes, such as Anais Anais, use higher volumes of alcohol, with a fragrance concentration of between 5 and 15 per cent. As such, it is cheaper than eau de parfum and is one of the most popular types of fragrance for daywear on the market. This type of fragrance will only last for up to three hours.

Eau de Cologne

Eau de cologne, has a much lower concentration of fragrance at between 2 to 4 per cent, meaning it is much cheaper than other types. It generally comes in bigger bottles.

Eau Fraiche

The least known term is Eau fraiche, which is similar to eau de cologne, in that the scent will generally last for up to only two hours. This has a fragrance concentration of between 1 to 3, with water making up the remaining liquid.

Then they walk around all the stores   - naming no names – to find the perfume they want at the cheapest price, which is stocked by many retailers, and eventually find the cheapest after spending an hour or so on the project, and buy that one. Then they go back to the car park, get in the car, and drive back home feeling really happy that they saved some money. And so the...
